Hm, ich bin noch etwas verwirrt. Worum geht es genau? Was sind das für Matrizen und was sind die Anforderungen?

Was ich verstehe: Du hast dünn besetzte Matrizen, die enorm groß sind (sonst wäre es ja kein Problem), die Elemente nur auf den Diagonalen haben. Es gibt zwei Datenstrukturen zur Auswahl, 1. Jede Diagonale als separate Liste speichern, 2. Jeden Eintrag mit Index (x/y) und Wert speichern. Und du willst, dass es von außen so aussieht, als sei beides gleichzeitig der Fall.

Zwei Ideen dazu:
- Ganz naiv könntest du natürlich 2 Matrizenklassen haben, und der Benutzer muss explizit zwischen ihnen konvertieren. Simpel aber nicht unbedingt maximal effizient.
- Du könntest intern immer die Diagonalen speichern, aber einen (x/y) Zugriffsoperator implementieren. Man sollte ja aus den Koordinaten recht leicht die Diagonale bestimmen können.

Ich weiß nicht, ob das schon irgendwie weiter hilft, aber es sollte zumindest aufzeigen, wo du dein Problem noch besser erklären könntest.

Wenn Du mit großen Matrizen arbeitest, nimmst Du dann ublas oder eins der Zig Derivate? Die bringen doch Sparse Matrizen mit.
Früher mal Dreamworlds. Früher mal Open Asset Import Library. Heutzutage nur noch so rumwursteln.

Wie gross sind die Matrizen?
Was hast du vor damit?
Wie oft werden sie gefüllt, wie oft gelesen? Wie sieht es mit random Access aus?
Tut dir Laufzeit oder Memory mehr weh?
In Memory Layout oder serialisieren?
Die Antworten auf diese Fragen würde es uns deutlich erleichtern dir zu helfen ;)

Im Zweifel: Nimm die Struktur deren Nachteile dir weniger wehtun und schreibe evtl einen Wrapper um die andere Zugriffsart zu simulieren. Noch besser wäre wenn die Zugriffe unabhängige von der zugrundeliegenden Struktur wären, das ist aber je nach Datensatz und Laufzeitanforderungen nicht immer sinnvoll möglich.
Bevor man den Kopf schüttelt, sollte man sich vergewissern einen zu haben

Momentan gehe ich noch davon aus, dass Bandmatrizen spärlich besetzte Matrizen sind. Was ist denn deine Vorstellung der "speziellen Bandmatrix-Datenstruktur" im Gegensatz zu einer "Sparse-Struktur"? Vielleicht stehe ich auf dem Schlauch, aber die Informationen zu Deiner Fragestellung sind sehr... sparse ;-)
